The Article About Nothing (Dear Wale: The Album About Nothing Is Everything)…

The_album_about_nothing

“Lord, my all, what you think of it? Been on this long road accumulating luggage. As time proceeds, preoccupied with everything. I think it’s ’bout that I sing of nothing”

Xenophobia, Boko Haram, E-Tolls, Higher Taxes, Point of orders, random Facebook messages, pianos falling out the sky, Ebola, corrupt politicians, etc… so much bad stuff that’s got us all preoccupied, when this happens I just feel like tossing away all the #moneymonday issues, conspiracy theories and writing about NOTHING…

Warning: If you havent listened to Wale’s new album then you might be lost. Do yourself a favour and have a listen.

When all the bullshit gets you all worked out and preoccupied, then Wale’s new album is the best refuge to get away from it all. The album is titled “The Album About Nothing” and it serves as a perfect getaway from all the world’s ills. This project took me back to Wale’s debut album ‘Attention Deficit‘, it’s soulful and well put together, in my opinion it’s so un-MMG like. This album restores all the lost hope in the commercial Hollywood scene, it’s one of those projects were you immediately get the feel that the artist went ‘Macklemore‘ and had complete creative control on the entire project, from intro to outro.

Unlike his past past 2 albums, Wale goes back to basics rapping about ‘White Shoes’, ‘Helium Balloons’, ‘Girls on prescription pills’ and ‘overdrafts in the bank again’. Like his debut album ‘Attention deficit’ the album has got that simple yet complex play me over and over again type of feel, so soulful you may even study to it if you like.

Given Wale’s complex and poetic writing style, you might have to rewind a couple of times before you actually ‘get it’. But if all fails, Seinfeld comes to your rescue. It’s becoming a trend whereby MC’s use comedians to give their albums that humorous broken down feel.

Seinfeld comes on most of the time at the beginning of each track and in an indirect manner breaks down what the logic behind the song.

maxresdefaultFor example, track 04 – The Pessimist (Feat J Cole)… In the song Wale touches on all the negatives (the pessimist) that has come from Blacks not helping themselves and the system not helping as well. All these problems make him feel hopeless in making a better life for himself and for blacks. Seinfeld breaks it down by giving an intro which goes…..

“I don’t want hope, hope is killing me. My dream is to become hopeless. When you’re hopeless you don’t care, and when you don’t care, that indifference, it makes you attractive”

Would go on and on about how genius the concept of the album is or how genius the album is, but before I get preoccupied with what to spend my last 140  characters on, I’d rather write NOTHING….
