As parents, we really should try harder for our kids to not have celebrities as role models

Qu’ils mangent de la brioche—Let them eat cake.”- Marie-Antoinette

So, I was looking at the past weekend’s events and a story I found interesting, was the recent event that was hosted by the ANC, to mark the 20-day countdown to the local government elections. Boy, was it celebrity swamped! All the A- listers *if we have such here, our celebrity culture is not that deep*, they were all happy posing and dressed in their beautiful ANC regalia! I must admit those ANC clothes are beautiful Shem! I mean they have David Tlale designing for them right?! And there’s a particular dress I would love to have! But….

As I was watching this, I just kept having one thought “as parents, we really should try harder for our kids to not have celebrities as role models”, really try harder! I mean everybody has freedom of association right? Its part of the constitution and it’s also the most common right used or defended by racists, when trying to keep us from entering their resorts or anywhere they want us not to be. It will also be the one used by these celebrities when explaining their link and partying with the ruling party! In all honesty, there is really nothing wrong with that, I would not even be commenting on it, bar for: its election time and these celebrities have a following that the ANC needs and wants and they all know it. I would also have no issues, if I had ever heard them speak out on ANC policies that are detrimental to the country and to the people! The same people who support and buy their stuff! But dololo, I guess they’re happy about everything in the country right? No issues with the high unemployment mainly experienced by you, their fans! 53% of  the youth are unemployed, even more your parents are also unemployed, with unemployment rate among black Africans at 40.6%, more than four times that of whites, using the expanded definition.

These people are out for themselves, they are about pushing their agendas! I guess they have to eat! See, the problem is more than half of South Africans live below the poverty line and 10% live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than R17.85 a day and they would really love to eat! Real basic stuff, like bread and pap you know, nothing fancy like crab and Moët. I miss the days when artists where community commentators and they described what they saw and what the community was going through, through their art! I mean there has been a lot happening to supply them with material for a long time #FeesMustfall #TshwaneBurning #Guptagate #SABCCensorship #Nkandla *yes! NKANDLA* and the pissing of the very same constitution that they will use! *Simphiwe Dana is excluded Shem! She is very outspoken when it comes to South Africa and its issues, she has challenged most of the politicians and political parties! For that I applaud her*

Fatima Shabodien (as quoted from Mail & Guardian), ActionAid SA’s country director, said “while South African women had been fighting for a place at the economic table for the past 22 years, and some had made it to CEO positions and were on boards of JSE-listed companies, the economic framework needed to be questioned. The current economic model is fundamentally premised on the exploitation of people and the environment. For the first time in history, there is global agreement that this macroeconomic framework does not work for the majority of people globally, rather serving the interests of a few, based on race, class and location,”

Don’t tell me ANC is working well when I live in era where my white counterpart is earning six times more than me, don’t tell me ANC is working well when our kids can’t attend previous model C’s schools because of where they were born! Yes, the Schools act is flawed “The admission policy of a public school is determined by the governing body, but they must admit learners without unfairly discriminating”. What the hell does this even mean? When I find a school with twenty seven learners in a class and only three were not white!? IMF “South Africa is grappling with growth that is too slow to raise average living standards, which is deeply problematic when one-third of the working population is effectively excluded from the economy. So far, there has been only limited progress on reforms to remedy that situation”.

The problem is not with association and which party one supports or whatever! The problem is with being disingenuous! You can’t say one thing and do another maan! One day you are not about politics and then the next you are at a political party and telling us who understand, that most things are political, our only hope is the ANC? Well here is my response screw ya’ll and I am happy my daughter is smarter than all ya’ll! And she ain’t that deep into all ya’ll! But I will give you this Shem, we are all human with flaws! Which is why our kids should just be inspired by some of your moves but NEVER EVER aspire to be you! They should just be better xha! And as parents, we really need to ensure this happens!
