I want to believe that there was a time when these pillars were firmly strong; I want to recall cases of the office of the public protector before Thuli Madonsela. The truth of the matter is the office of the public protector existed in theory until a few years back, the NPA has always been corrupt dating back to 2005 and the parliament has always been the same way it is now.
I want to subscribe to the popular belief held by many that the pillars of our democracy are under attack. But doing that will be short sighted of me, I will be defeating the process of analyzing the problems we facing by narrowing my analysis and accepting that Jacob Zuma is the cause of all our problems and the judiciary worked well before his term.
The question we should be asking is did we face this challenges before his term? We cannot compare Thuli Madonsela to any other public protector because no other public protector was tested like her? Equally the judiciary looked stable but we don’t know for sure if it was stable, the NPA has always been embroiled in scandals that tainted/questioned the integrity of the organization, this is exactly the reason why today we stuck with a decade old case that is being discussed in court because the NPA was never in shape. If Schaik was charged and found guilty of corruption charges and it was made clear that his partner in crime was Jacob Zuma then why is it that he hasn’t seen his day in court 11 years later?
Lately we have developed a tone that suggest parliament worked better when everyone wore a black suit and decent dress, we have equated the attire by EFF to an attack, while ignoring the real attack. The real attack to parliament started when a third part majority party could not do anything to transform the country, when nothing came out of that parliament for years and it was instead reduced to a circus long before EFF walked in that was an attack. The attack started when everything was reduced to commission of enquiries stretch for years until we forget about them.
