Should South Africa compromise State sovereignty over Relations with other member states of the International Criminal Court/ The Hague (ICC)? No they must not!
I personally feel nations that are raising qualms about the matter fear that African Nations that continue to be a part of the ICC would also want to leave. Imagine this, a UN organ, which western states exercise autonomy over, being left completely powerless sounds good right? I will explain why now. The Hague is a bully which every African heads of state fear. This organisation maintains a double standard for western states and allies in comparison. For instance people that should have been trialed by the ICC, former prime minister of the UK Tony Blair and former president George Bush Jnr these two were behind the western retaliation of 9/11 which ruined nations and contributed to the refugee crisis. Another is former US presidents Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon that allowed the Vietnamese war which lasted close to 20 years to continue. Imagine four presidents and nothing was done and no formal reparations were paid alongside it USSR leaders Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev were president during the time further the USSR was highly involved but yet the ICC never intervened. There is a much larger list of human rights violations by western states but where is the ICC? DOLOLO! Do not even get me started on Western governments that sustained apartheid.
Understand this gross human rights violations are not alright so do not think that leaders such as Muammar Gaddafi would survive my scrutiny. His ideologies were fantastic and he didn’t deserve to die. However many women that he violated came forth and highlighted the contradiction in his ideologies as in 1981 he previously stated he would ensure equality for Libyan women, however he subjected many women to rape and that is something I cannot forgive. He should have been trialed alongside the other white privileged leaders I mentioned above. This is one of the few reasons why I applaud the South African government for leaving the ICC, however is it for hidden incentives of the ANC? I do not know, but it is time that African states prioritise each other before Western imperialism and ideologies. However we must maintain that human rights violations cannot be tolerated in any environment as it will not be conducive for the people within it.
