The average fee that South Africans pay parking attendants stands at R4. This is a national average which includes in it South Africans in their different ages, colour, provinces, cities and tribes.
Personally I feel somewhat bad as the normal fee I pay them ranges from R0, R1, R2 and maybe R5 when I’m feeling good or have just been paid.
We broke down the national average fee paid to parking attendants by gender, our women it seems are out there making it rain more than us. Naturally we know that woman are nurturers, they are more caring and loving than us; this explains to an extend the extra R1 they contribute vs their male counterparts. The other explanation for this is that woman are easily bullied into paying parking attendants that might get aggressive with them
I felt this needed further analysis so let’s deep dive into the below reasons by gender as to why they pay parking attendants in trying to understand why women offer a higher fee.
29% of woman pay parking attendants because they feel they get bullied into it, this might mean they also get bullied into paying a higher fee vs men. Only 9% of men say they pay parking attendants because they feel bullied into it (see below pie chart)
-18% of ladies and 19% of men say they pay parking attendants because they’ve just gotten used to it, they just do it. I guess we have somewhat become conditioned to doing it.
-19% of men vs 13% of women say they do it as the parking attendants offer a sense of security.
-13% of men and woman do it because they feel sorry for the parking attendants, which is understandable, it’s not easy standing in the sun all day for a task that you at times do not get compensated for nor feel appreciated.
interesting to see that 6% of gents pay parking attendants to get rid of them, I love my brothers yet sometimes they can be very persistent, once had a dude run after my car to the robots so as to have me compensate him for the service he felt he had provided.
This type of attitude adds a different spice to the saying “you get what you ask for”.
We broke down the stats further by race, White people pay on average R6 to parking attendants, while Indians are right at the bottom with R2, stingy much lol.
Which province is the stingiest??? Turns out its the Western Cape, no wonder the parking attendants where on strike this festive season for low pay for the services they offer.
These stats above brought about another question, which province feels the most bullied by parking attendants?
Turns out The Western Cape province has the highest number of individuals who feel bullied by parking attendants, 60% of participants that felt they only pay because they are bullied into it are from the Western Cape, 33% from Gauteng. There could be a correlation between the low parking fee paid in the Western Cape and the high number of bullying incidents. This also explains the festive strike by parking attendants.
66% of individuals answered that they do not always pay parking attendants, this 66% pays on average if they ever do R4 vs the 34% that says they always pay parking attendants, who pay on average R6.
We asked our participants if they felt parking attendants are necessary, 54% said hell no, while 46% said hell yeh. The ones who feel the service necessary pay on average R5, and the ones who find the service useless pay on average R3.
To conclude, the top reason why South Africans pay parking attendants is because they feel bullied into it, the second top reason is that they’ve just gotten used to doing it. Leading us to come to a conclusion that the service provided by parking attendants isn’t seen as a value add in South Africa even with our high crime rates.
Be it that, with unemployment and standard of living being rife is South Africa, most of our underprivileged brothers and Sisters turn to this as their only source of income.
