It’s been said that men and young boys are becoming more and more trash of late. This is a social media famed name that describes the behaviour and personal traits of modern men. As I write this I just saw on the news that Sandile Mantsoe, the guy who allegedly killed Karabo Mokoena has been found guilty of her murder; there is another story I saw on facebook of a Mangosuthu University of Technology ex-student that killed his ex girlfriend in a Durban CBD residence.
Why are men suddenly becoming trash and abusive to our beautiful women? My answer is that we as a nation have recently found a voice to speak on injustices that have been happening in this country and more specifically to women, the positive voice that speaks for women has gotten louder and louder over the years. Rape, domestic abuse, murder and sexual harassment cases against women have gotten out of hand, what is it that is making our fathers, peers and young boys to abuse their women, rape them and molest them? This might be seen as a mental illness as no human being that is humane would perform such acts! What is it that is going wrong in our communities?
Well first of all, there are not enough mentors to teach our fellow male figures how to be humane and treat women right. Most of the time its due to a cycle, Dad was abusive towards mom and with that, the son has it in the back of his mind that that’s how things should be, there isn’t any positive role model to look up to. We have women conferences for discussions on equality and woman empowerment; yet we hear nothing of man conferences for young boys to teach them qualities that are humane and will help them contribute to the economy and country positively.
Well… Turns out there might be a perfect platform were tradition could be merged with real life skills to assist make a more mentally strong, culturally woke and driven black man who is capable of loving a woman to the core, capable of taking care of his kids and also capable of taking on the business and corporate world with his black woman right by his side. Remember how the Wakandans managed to create an environment where technology and tradition float on a parallel. Culture and technology living side by side. Why can we not create such an environment in our communities? Where culture and the modern world are incorporated, I mean even good text books for learning have to be revised and updated.
We already have a perfect platform where young men can be taught vital life skills like financial literacy, military training to aide in building their discipline, soft skills and other necessities that would take us the black race forward. The Initiation schools!!
Sure we still retain the practices that happen in our Initiation schools, but also make some value add adjustment and additions to take advantage of the age the young men are in – they are still curious, still learning and at a point where their minds are sponges, give or take the period of this Initiation school is a month or two, during that period we include financial literacy power-classes, military training to assist to enhance their discipline, teach them empathy, to be more resilient and to foster a culture of togetherness. If you think of it, an Initiation school is much like a camp, just more prolonged, which is what makes it more fun and can be a fruitful period filled with learnings of much needed skills for the kids. Those who do not want to go to university after Matric can go serve in the army or train to be police men as they would already have learned vital skills needed to serve in the army.
